CONROE AREA NEWS

New Projects Coming to Conroe

🏗️ New Conroe-area project filings show several familiar names planning work across Conroe, Montgomery and Willis. The list includes a Chick-fil-A renovation at 1321 W. Davis St. in Conroe, a KidSV new construction project on North Frazier Street, and a Divine Savior Academy project on Cude Cemetery Road in Willis.

Community Impact notes the filings come from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, so costs and timelines can change. Still, the list gives residents a useful early look at what may be moving next around town.

Magnolia Mayor Charts Next Steps

🏛️ Magnolia’s new mayor says infrastructure, staffing and rebuilding trust will be at the center of his first stretch in office. Chris Blair won the May 2 mayor race with 45.4% of the vote, according to Community Impact, and said the city has work to do as growth keeps pressing on local roads, services and planning.

Blair said his early priorities include steadying staffing at City Hall, addressing lift stations and water wells, improving roads, and moving forward with the next phase of the city’s wastewater plant.

AROUND THE METRO

Friendswood Eyes Flood Fixes

🌧️ Friendswood is taking another look at its citywide drainage needs after council heard an update tied to the future master drainage plan. Community Impact reported that roadside ditch and storm sewer improvements were among the top priorities flagged by Halff Associates at a June 1 meeting.

The early study looked at 53 project ideas and ranked five top priorities. For Houston-area readers, it is a reminder that drainage work is not one big fix. It is a long list of projects cities have to rank, fund and build over time.

Texas Tracks Screwworm Threat

🐮 Texas officials are stepping up their response after New World screwworm was confirmed in a 3-week-old calf in South Texas. Chron reported that Gov. Greg Abbott updated the state’s disaster response and warned the summer could be challenging as agencies try to keep the parasite from spreading.

The response includes quarantines, more traps, sterile fly efforts and a small infested zone near the detection site. Officials also stressed that this is an animal health and livestock issue, not a food safety problem.

BUSINESS UPDATE

Organic Meal Prep Shop Opens in Magnolia

🥗 Nourished for You has opened in Magnolia with an organic menu aimed at people looking for ready-made meals and cleaner pantry items. Community Impact reported the shop celebrated its grand opening weekend May 30-31 at 903 Honea Egypt Road, Ste. H.

The business offers organic meal preps made with locally grown ingredients, plus pressed juices, grass-fed proteins, gluten-free breads, tallow-based chips, facial products and soaps. It is a small local opening, but it fits the growing demand for quick food that still feels fresh.

THE SPORTS REPORT

Paredes Powers Astros Past A’s

Isaac Paredes gave Astros fans plenty to cheer about Friday night. MLB.com reported that Paredes drove in a career-high four runs, including a three-run homer in the first inning, as Houston beat the Athletics 5-1 at Daikin Park.

The lineup also got a boost from Jose Altuve, who returned after missing 17 games with a strained left oblique. Peter Lambert held Oakland to one run over 5 1/3 innings, helping Houston open the series with a win and a fuller-looking lineup.

Astros Drop Finale After A’s Power Up

The Astros’ weekend ended quietly Sunday with a 5-0 loss to the Athletics at Daikin Park. MLB.com reported that starter Mike Burrows gave up five runs, four earned, along with eight hits, two walks and two home runs over five innings.

Oakland got a two-run homer from Nick Kurtz and a solo shot from Brent Rooker. Houston’s lineup could not get much going, and the loss closed the series on a flat note after a stronger start to the weekend.
