MoCo Weighs Bond and Jail Plans

Montgomery County commissioners will meet Thursday to decide whether to call a Nov. 3 bond election for a new justice center in downtown Conroe. The court will review polling, election steps and possible funding options.

Commissioners also plan to continue talks about a new jail and may approve early financing and planning work. The meeting starts at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 6 at the Alan B. Sadler Commissioners Court Building.

Five Local Businesses Make Moves

Five businesses are opening, expanding or building across Conroe, Montgomery and Willis. Little Pookie Kids Co. added a second shop in downtown Conroe, while Serenity Med Spa and Benny & Hash recently opened in Willis and Montgomery.

Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming is preparing a new location, and Two Step Farm has added seven homebuilders for its second phase. The roundup gives residents a quick look at new places to shop, dine, relax and live.

Attention: Advertising Opportunity for Local Businesses!

You may have noticed that we have been testing advertising. I’ve been using my bookkeeping business as the guinea pig and visits to its website have significantly increased.

We will be selecting a few local small business advertisers to receive a considerable amount of free advertising in multiple issues of one to four of our local newsletters (Conroe, Houston, Pearland, Sugar Land).

The free advertising will be a combination of story-style ads with a photo and internet links, and digital banner-type ads with a couple supporting sentences about your business and internet links. If you have a local small business, let’s have a conversation. You can email us at [email protected].

We are specifically looking for the following types of local small businesses:

  • Personal Injury Attorney

  • Insurance Agent / Agency

  • Junk Removal

  • HVAC

  • Landscaping

  • Real Estate Agency

  • Dental Group

  • Primary Care Group

If you are a local business owner and you are interested, email us today!

AROUND THE METRO

Houston Residents Direct $1M

Houston’s District C is asking residents how to spend $1 million in neighborhood improvement funds. A new “Direct Your Dollars” survey lets people rank needs such as parks, sidewalks, accessibility, trees, beautification and drainage.

The survey stays open through Sept. 7. City staff will also weigh cost, urgency and project feasibility before making final choices. Selected projects are set to be announced at a Sept. 19 town hall at the West Gray Multi-Service Center.

Chronicle Launches Commute Briefing

The Houston Chronicle launched a weekday audio briefing made for the morning commute. “The 713: Commute Mode” begins with a weather update, then gives listeners a quick rundown of the day’s main local stories.

Human journalists write and edit the report, while an AI voice reads most of it. The free briefing is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, the Chronicle website and its mobile app, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

BUSINESS UPDATE

Woodlands Area Chairman’s Ball Set for Aug. 15

The Woodlands Area Chamber will honor its 2025-26 Chairman, Justin Kendrick, at the 2026 Chairman’s Ball on Saturday, Aug. 15. Guests are invited to wear “Country Club Chic” clothing, with cocktails beginning at 6:30 p.m. and dinner and the program starting at 7:30 p.m.

The event runs at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott. Tickets are $250 each or $2,500 for a table of 10, with sponsorship options also available.

Preslee’s To Open This Fall

Preslee’s Southern Good Eatery will replace The Hop, a Webster dance club closing after 38 years. The Houston Heights restaurant plans to open in the historic 1916 building this fall and keep it family-friendly.

The new location will have about 120 dining seats, a 60-seat bar, a playground and big-screen TVs. It will not keep the old dance floor. The owners say more details about the opening date, hours and menu will come later.

THE SPORTS REPORT

Clowney Returns, Higgins Shines

Jadeveon Clowney returned to Texans practice Tuesday for the first time since leaving Houston in 2019. The 33-year-old edge rusher said he has no hard feelings and is glad to have time to learn DeMeco Ryans’ defense before games begin.

Wide receiver Jayden Higgins also stood out, making several catches from C.J. Stroud, including a touchdown against Derek Stingley Jr. Higgins is building on a rookie year with 525 yards and six touchdowns.

Aggies Must Rebuild Their Defense

Texas A&M must prove its defense can stay strong after losing key players from last season’s College Football Playoff team. The Aggies led the nation in sacks, but several major contributors have moved on.

Coach Mike Elko added depth through the transfer portal and brings back an experienced secondary. Ray Coney could replace linebacker Taurean York, while transfer Anto Saka may help the defensive line. If the new group performs, another postseason run remains possible.

THANKS!

🏛️ That’s it for today, MoCo. Have a great Wednesday!
