CONROE AREA NEWS

MOCO Man Pleads Guilty In Bald Eagle Shooting

A bald eagle was shot in Porter, and now a Montgomery County man has pleaded guilty in federal court.

Santos Guerrero, 42, admitted he shot the bird at his home on Oct. 11, 2024. His attorney said Guerrero thought it was a hawk killing his chickens, but the bald eagle later died after being badly hurt. Wardens and federal officials investigated after a witness reported the shooting.

Guerrero faces up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine. His sentencing is set for July 30. Bald eagles are protected under federal law.

Payton Riley Shares New Music at The Table

Payton Riley is only 17, but she is already building a name far beyond Montgomery County. The local singer recently returned to downtown Conroe for a concert at The Table at Madeley, where she gave hometown fans the first listen to her new song, Rainmaker.

The song is about a disappointing relationship, but the night felt bigger than one release. Riley mixed old songs, new music, and crowd favorites into a 90-minute set. She also gave fans a sneak peek at Carousel, her next release. With Nashville recording, overseas tours, and more new music ahead, Payton’s story keeps growing.

AROUND THE METRO

From Astros Closer to Archaeologist

Brad Lidge already had a place in Houston sports history. The former Astros closer helped pitch Houston to its first World Series in 2005, then later closed out the Phillies’ 2008 World Series win.

Now, Lidge has found a very different second act. After retiring from baseball, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in archaeology and has worked on digs in Italy. This fall, he begins a Ph.D. program. His story is a reminder that life can open a new door, even after the lights of the big stage fade.

Jeep Weekend Ends With 110 Arrests

Jeep Weekend 2026 brought big crowds to Crystal Beach and the Bolivar Peninsula in Galveston County, but officials say the four-day event ended with no reported injuries. Law enforcement made 110 arrests, all tied to traffic stops inside the enforcement zone.

The Texas Department of Public Safety also reported about 1,500 traffic stops. Officials used checkpoints, beach patrols, and strict traffic enforcement after past problems raised safety concerns. This year, Galveston County added a three-mile event zone, one entrance and exit, and new beach rules to help keep the weekend under control.

THE SPORTS REPORT

Aggies Women’s Tennis Wins National Championship

Texas A&M women’s tennis is back on top. The Aggies beat Auburn 4-1 to win the 2026 NCAA national title, giving the program its second championship in three years.

A&M started strong by winning the doubles point, then had to pause for lightning. When play resumed, Auburn pushed hard in singles, but the Aggies answered. Violeta Martinez and Lexington Reed helped build the lead before Daria Smetannikov won a tough three-set match to seal it. For Texas A&M, this was more than a win. It was another step toward a lasting legacy.

Guilherme Lifts Houston Dynamo Past Vancouver

Houston Dynamo fans had to wait all night, but Guilherme made it worth it. The Brazilian winger scored in stoppage time to give Houston a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps at Shell Energy Stadium.

The goal came after Vancouver’s goalkeeper was sent off in the 64th minute. Guilherme beat Aziel Jackson off the dribble, then fired a near-post shot into the net. The win moved Houston into fifth place in the Western Conference, and Guilherme now leads the team with 7 goals and 5 assists.
