Montgomery County leaders reviewed fire safety plans and a possible site for a new county jail. Officials said a federal grant should return $40,379 in costs tied to the 2025 Pauline Road Fire. They also discussed buying three truck-driven barriers that could protect first responders and drivers at wreck scenes on major local highways.

Sheriff Wesley Doolittle proposed building the jail on 41 county-owned acres near the mental health facility on Hilbig Road. Commissioners voted 4-0 to establish that location for further study. Funding remains undecided, and the barrier request will return during the Aug. 12 budget workshop.

The Players Theatre Company is celebrating 60 years of bringing plays and musicals to the Conroe area. The nonprofit began in 1966 as the Little Theatre of Conroe and performed in several local spaces before moving into its current downtown Conroe home.

Its 2026-27 season theme is “Legacy and Revelations,” honoring the group’s history and future. The anniversary season begins Aug. 14 with “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” The milestone gives local theater fans a chance to celebrate six decades of volunteer work, live performance, and community storytelling.

Spring Branch ISD will open its new Guthrie Center for the 2026-27 school year. The career and technical education hub was funded through a 2022 bond program that set aside $290.3 million for CTE improvements across the district.

Students will train in fields such as automotive work, welding, cosmetology, architecture, and culinary arts. Some programs will serve the public, letting visitors get an oil change, receive nail services, or eat at the student-run cafe. District leaders say industry professionals will teach many courses, giving teenagers practical experience before college, technical school, military service, or full-time work.

Houston’s extreme heat sent more residents to emergency rooms on July 22 than on any day in the city’s five-and-a-half-year dataset, except during the power outages after Hurricane Beryl. City data showed 95 heat-related ER visits as the heat index approached 117 degrees.

Houston opened more than 100 cooling centers, but outdoor workers, older adults, and people without reliable air conditioning remained especially vulnerable. Doctors urged residents to drink water, seek shade, wear light clothing, and cool down quickly at the first signs of illness. The report is a reminder that even experienced Texans can be overwhelmed by prolonged summer heat.

Montgomery business leaders can build connections at the Chamber’s next Coffee Network on Wednesday, Aug. 5. The casual gathering runs from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Lone Star Community Center, 2500 Lone Star Parkway in Montgomery.

Organizers expect about 70 to 100 professionals for coffee, breakfast, conversation, and short introductions. Attendees should prepare a 30-second elevator pitch about their work. SB&K Benefits is sponsoring the event. Admission is free for active Chamber members, while guests should contact Chamber staff before attending. The event offers a low-pressure way to meet local owners, professionals, and possible business partners.

Woodforest National Bank named Julie Mayrant its new president and chief executive officer, effective July 15. She succeeds Robert Marling and previously served as president and chief community banking officer, overseeing the bank’s retail operations.

Mayrant began her Woodforest career at the bank’s first in-store branch in Conroe. She later helped expand wealth management and commercial banking services. In her new role, she plans to deepen customer relationships, strengthen community involvement, and support long-term growth. Woodforest now operates more than 740 branches in 17 states. Mayrant is a Sam Houston State graduate and earned an executive MBA from Texas A&M.

The Astros completed their latest series with a 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night, finishing a three-game sweep and returning to .500 at 55-55. Houston has won eight of its last nine games after a difficult start to the season.

Yainer Diaz went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Jeremy Peña also homered, while Cam Smith hit the go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning. Hayden Wesneski allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings in his return from Tommy John surgery. After Thursday’s off day, Houston opens a key home series against Texas on Friday.

Texas A&M freshman Brandon Arrington could earn immediate playing time at cornerback this season. The five-star recruit from Mount Miguel High School in San Diego arrived as one of the top defensive backs in his class and has already made a strong impression on coach Mike Elko’s staff.

Arrington is competing with experienced players Dezz Ricks and Rickey Gibson III for a starting role. His speed is a major advantage: he holds a San Diego 100-meter record of 10.21 seconds. With Will Lee III now in the NFL, the Aggies have an opening in the secondary, giving Arrington a real opportunity to contribute in Week 1.
