CONROE AREA NEWS

MCSO Issues 183 Citations for Seat Belts

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has wrapped up its part in the Click It or Ticket campaign, backed by TxDOT. The goal was simple: get more drivers and passengers to buckle up, because seat belts still save lives in crashes.

Over two weeks, deputies spent 65.5 extra hours on traffic enforcement. They issued 183 citations and 125 warnings for seat belt and traffic safety violations. MCSO and TxDOT say the message stays the same: wear your seat belt, every trip, every time.

Big Turnaround at Conroe’s Animal Shelter

Conroe’s animal shelter has reached a big milestone. A year and a half after the city took over operations, Police Chief Jon Buckholtz said the shelter is now recognized as a no-kill facility.

The change is clear. In 2024, the shelter euthanized 805 dogs and cats. Since the city took over, that number has dropped to 168, and the live release rate has grown from 76.8% to 92.5%. The city has also made changes in staffing, daily operations, intake, donations, partnerships, and volunteer support.

$55B SpaceX Project Moves Ahead in Grimes County

Grimes County officials approved a tax break for SpaceX’s planned $55 billion Terafab chipmaking project on Wednesday. The project could bring 1,800 jobs to the rural area outside College Station.

The vote came after a packed public hearing where many residents raised concerns about property values, local businesses, the environment, and SpaceX’s lack of transparency. SpaceX said the facility would support chips for Starlink satellites and future space-based data centers, while also bringing long-term workforce opportunities.

World Cup Orange Bus Rolls Into Fulshear Soon

A famous piece of World Cup fan fun is coming to Fulshear. The Dutch Orange Bus will stop at Hat Creek Burger Company on June 18, ahead of the Netherlands World Cup match at Houston Stadium on June 20.

Fans wearing orange can get a free burger, take photos with the bus, and two attendees will win World Cup match tickets. The bus will later lead the Oranje Fanwalk from Rice University to the stadium, with more than 10,000 fans expected to join.

The Dutch Fanwalk is a phenomenon and it should be quite a sight when it happens in Houston.

Fun fact: The Netherlands would be the 5th largest U.S. state by population if it were in the United States (1. California, 2. Texas, 3. Florida, 4. New York, 5. Netherlands).
