CONROE AREA NEWS

Montgomery County Backs Four New Courts

⚖️ Montgomery County commissioners approved four new courts in a scaled back request that now calls for two district courts, one county court at law, and one probate court. The vote was 4-1, with Precinct 4 Commissioner Matt Gray voting no over concerns about where the county would house them.

Judge Kristin Bays said court filings have climbed sharply, from 33,419 in 2021 to 40,794 in 2025. Commissioners also moved ahead with architect talks for a possible new courthouse.

Willis Fire Prompts Safety Push for Older Residents

🔥 Montgomery County fire officials are urging families to check smoke alarms and make safety plans for older loved ones after a 78-year-old Willis woman died in a house fire Thursday morning. Residents near Cedar Lane Loop called 911, and Montgomery County ESD 1 firefighters found the woman in the kitchen after controlling the flames.

Investigators said an initial autopsy showed significant smoke inhalation and that she likely died trying to escape. The fire remains under investigation.

AROUND THE METRO

FIFA Fan Fest Closes Monday for Storms

⛈️ FIFA Fan Festival Houston will be closed Monday, June 15, after organizers cited expected severe weather and public safety guidance. The full-day closure follows a rough Sunday, when lightning forced the festival grounds to clear twice.

The weather plan requires guests to leave when lightning is detected within eight miles. The site can reopen only after 30 straight minutes without another strike. Organizers said fans should watch official channels for any further changes later this week.

Houston Summer Events Return

🎆 Community Impact rounded up seven Inner Loop events for the summer, including Juneteenth at Discovery Green on June 18 and Freedom Over Texas at Eleanor Tinsley Park on July 4. The list also includes Roots & Rhythm at Five Central, a Wax & Words workshop at Sawyer Yards, and the HTX Contemporary Dance Festival.

Details vary by event, including free admission for some and paid tickets for others, so readers should check the event pages before heading out.

BUSINESS UPDATE

Top This Party Co. Opens in Conroe

🎈 Top This Party Co. opened its Conroe storefront at 12621 Hwy. 105 W. Owner Selena Leal told Community Impact the shop grew from a conversation about an open spot next to Baby Cakes, which she saw as a strong fit.

The store sells party decorations and favors, offers studio printing for items like posters and tote bags, and hosts local clothing and jewelry vendors, including Little Pookies Co. and Beauty with Adrianna.

Downtown Houston Businesses Wait for World Cup Bump

🏙️ Some downtown Houston businesses say the World Cup opening weekend has not yet brought the crowds they expected. KPRC 2 spoke with business owner Fernando Villegas, who said he invested in staffing, menu changes, and new drinks ahead of the tournament but saw only normal traffic.

Employees at The Little Dipper also described a slow weekend. Villegas said he is still taking a wait-and-see approach as more matches come to Houston.

THE SPORTS REPORT

Royals Blank Astros in Series Finale

Stephen Kolek shut down the Astros on Sunday as Kansas City beat Houston 4-0 and avoided a series sweep. Kolek allowed five hits across 7 1/3 innings, walked one, and struck out four.

Maikel Garcia had three hits and drove in three runs for the Royals. Houston had scored 18 runs and hit eight homers across Friday and Saturday to secure its first winning series in Kansas City since 2022, but managed only five hits in the finale.

Germany Rolls in Houston World Cup Opener

Germany rolled past Curaçao 7-1 Sunday in Houston’s first World Cup match at NRG Stadium, turning a tight first half into a statement win. Kai Havertz scored twice, and Curaçao made history with its first World Cup goal from Livano Comenencia in the 21st minute.

The score was tied 1-1 until the 38th minute, before Germany pulled away. The announced crowd was 68,021, and Germany will face Ivory Coast next Saturday in Toronto.
